Shannon O’Connell is the 2005 Australian Amateur Female Lightweight Champion. Her list of accomplishments as an amateur boxer is impressive with a current record of 14 wins 4 losses in her 2 year career in amateur boxing. Her current status is on the rise as she has successfully defended her title at the Australian Nationals 2005 hosted in Perth in March/ April. Stopping her opponent, Oceania Gold Medalist, Casey Taylor from South Australia in the second round, this convincing win means that this 22 year blonde Australian beauty remains the golden girl of Australian Amateur Boxing.
Shannon has recently attracted substantial public and media
attention as the 'Million Dollar Baby'. Yet despite this, Shannon has concentrated her efforts
in training, competing and gaining sponsorship to help her fund her campaign
journey to the Nationals and World Titles. Her dream of gaining a position
on the Australian Olympic Boxing Team in Beijing 2008, is one that she is
keeping in sight. She is
dedicated to making her dreams a reality and trains intensively with Queensland’s most
successful team, The Logan Boxing Team.
Getting There
Relocating
from South Australia to obtain the best training possible, Shannon is coached
and trained by the very respected Chris
McCullen (Australian Women’s Team coach, Team trainer and professional
boxer) at his gym at Daisy Hill, Queensland.

Shannon’s career has taken a determined step forward and she maintains peak physical performance through regular training and fitness conditioning and sheer hard work.
Shannon’s elegant and athletic exterior is surpassed only by her tenacity and true champion instinct in the ring. Her drive and determination is showing solid results in the lead up to her World Title challenge.

Winning Gold at the 2005 International A.R.A.F.U.R.A
Games against the N.Z Champion is another notch to Shannon's belt, one
that is is setting the stage for the Oceania Championships to be held in Papua
New Guinea in June 2005.
With the World Titiles coming up in September, Shannon
says she is.. 'good enough to be the Australian Champion, she is good enough
to take a hefty shot at a World Title.."
There are plenty that agree with her.

Making History
Shannon's recent win at the 2005 International A.R.A.F.U.R.A Games in Darwin saw her as Australia's 1st Female Boxer to win a gold medal in the history of the Event.
Shannon's future successes will see her again make history as a part of the first Olympics Games that allows females to enter the Olympic ring, should female boxing be sanctioned by the Olympic Committee.
